Fer à Cheval has made soap in Marseille since 1856 and is the oldest of the city’s soap works still operating. Genuine savon de Marseille is cooked in open cauldrons from vegetable oils over several days, then washed with sea water and rinsed until nothing remains but soap and the glycerin the process produces — no animal fat, no synthetic fragrance, no color. This is that soap in liquid form, built on olive oil, which is why it is gentle enough for frequent hand-washing.
