Flamingo Estate bottled the smell of a tomato vine on a summer afternoon, and it is remarkable. Hand-poured in Los Angeles, it is the candle I would light in a kitchen.

About Flamingo Estate
Flamingo Estate is a seven-acre garden in the hills of Los Angeles that its owner, Richard Christiansen, turned into a pantry and home brand: olive oil, honey, soaps and candles that begin with what grows there. The Heirloom Tomato scent is its signature — the smell of brushing past a tomato plant in late summer, green and a little peppery, rather than the fruit itself. Flamingo Estate has been profiled by Vogue and Architectural Digest.
How to use
- Light in a living room, entryway or kitchen for a green, garden-inspired fragrance.
- For the first burn, allow 2–3 hours for the wax surface to melt evenly.
- Keep the wick trimmed to ¼ inch and centered. Limit later burns to 3 hours.
- Stop using when ¼ inch of wax remains. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Questions
Does it smell like tomatoes? Like the plant, not the fruit: the green, slightly peppery scent of the vine when you touch it, with a herbal edge.
Where does it work best? The kitchen, where it reads as fresh rather than perfumed, and an entryway.
Why the first-burn rule? Wax remembers. If the first burn does not reach the edges, the candle tunnels for the rest of its life.
Pairs with
The Heirloom Tomato hand soap and dish soap for the same scent at the sink; Heritage olive oil for the table. Everything we carry from Flamingo Estate.
Lello’s Point of View
Why we chose it. Tomato leaf is one of summer’s great scents and almost nobody thinks to bring it indoors. This candle captures the green, peppery smell of the vine rather than the sweetness of the fruit.
What it makes better. Kitchens and entryways smell fresh and botanical rather than perfumed. It creates atmosphere without turning the room into a conventional candle shop.
How we would use it. Light it in the kitchen after the cooking is finished or in the entryway before guests arrive. Give the first burn enough time to reach the edges so the candle burns properly thereafter.
Who will love it. Garden people, Flamingo Estate devotees, design-conscious hosts and anyone bored by predictable floral and vanilla home fragrance.
Why it earns its place. An 8 oz coconut-and-soy candle hand-poured in Los Angeles with Flamingo Estate’s signature Heirloom Tomato fragrance makes the scent itself distinctive enough to justify the object.
